On July 10th, 2023, during a Press Conference, the Hellenic Film Center (GFC) presented five (5) new, distinct programs to support Greek cinematography, funded by the European Commission – Next Generation EU, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. These programs will be implemented by GFC, significantly supporting its strategic goal of supporting, developing and renewing the soulful potential of Greek cinematography, which is the pillar for a sustainable future of the country’s audiovisual sector.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of GFC, Markos Holevas, emphasized the following: “It is with great pleasure that we announce today the five new programs, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, believing that they will also contribute to the emergence of new creators and strengthen their extroversion. For today’s result, we had the full support of the Minister of Culture, Ms. Lina Mendoni, during her previous term, and also of the outgoing Deputy Minister for Contemporary Culture, Mr. Nikolas Giatromanolakis. Our common belief was that the cinema, and the audiovisual sector in general, are a driver of development for the country. It is known that since the time of the memorandums, the GFC has been trying to meet its role with insufficient funding – significantly less than all European countries with the same population as ours. These new programs, totaling 7,247,000, are a financial breather, but also an opportunity to develop the GFC in new horizons of the complex and ever-changing environment of the international cinematographic and audiovisual sector, taking advantage of its long-standing presence and connection with European institutions, but also with networks of counterpart bodies in the European cinema space. A recent experience makes us optimistic: as an opportunity and not as a welcome benefit policy during the difficult period of the pandemic, the emergency Covid-19 programs of the Ministry of Health and Welfare were implemented. As an example, I mention that short films emerged from these programs, such as the internationally awarded multi-awarded “AirHostess 737″, but also a list of 25 animations that for the first time made the Greek animation community visible to such a wide spectrum”.
